Parrot Scams

With all the warnings on the internet pertaining to parrot scams, we keep hearing of people still being taken for their hard earned money and not receiving anything in return but heartache. Do not let your emotions overtake your good judgment, as the parrots in these scam ads do not even exist or are not "as advertised".

If you would like to share a story, please feel free to email us and we will post it in hopes of helping others.

The following are some pointers that may help you determine if the ad you are answering is a scam:

1)  Parrots cannot simply be shipped into Canada from any other country without proper permits. Do not be taken by a seller stating they will supply all the paperwork. Most parrot species are on the CITES endangered species listings and cannot be imported into Canada at all, as the Canadian government has disabled import from many countries. More information on this topic can be found on CITES - Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

2)  Does the ad you are reading advertise parrots at a low price, for adoption to good home, or only requesting shipping fees? This ad has scam written all over it! Go with your instinct – if it sounds too good to be true – it usually is.

3)  Anyone can create a website and make any claims they want. Therefore, if possible, visit the breeder's facilities you are considering purchasing a baby from. You can then see first-hand how the birds are kept and how babies are being raised. Always ask if the baby was actually bred by the breeder, as some people are buyer/sellers. If this is not possible, try to get several references from others that have visited the facility and purchased a parrot from the breeder. Never purchase a baby because you feel sorry about the conditions that it is being raised in. This enables back yard breeders to continue on and can also be a prelude to disease (See our FAQs for more information about this topic).

4)  Never buy a parrot just because you think you are getting a "good deal" as there is usually a reason. Birds, just like humans, have personalities and if not raised correctly or socialized properly can display behavioral problems. In addition, there are many bird viruses that can be underlying.

5)  Buy from a Canadian reputable parrot breeder.  I am sure you are asking yourself, “How can I know if the breeder is reputable?” Here are some hints that may help:

Established parrot breeders are known within the industry, can supply references, and may have a Canadian registered business

Reputable parrot breeders will encourage and welcome you to visit their facilities

Reputable parrot breeders have a website that is continuously updated as new information and babies are available

Reputable parrot breeders have a Canadian phone number and can be reached easily (beware of cell phones that can be disconnected and you are left with no contact information after you have already sent funds)

Beware of gmail, yahoo, Hotmail etc. email accounts, as these can be coming from anywhere in the world. There are many sites that enable you to translate the email header so you can determine where the email is coming from.

Beware of bad grammar, spelling mistakes, and inconsistent information that does not make sense

Check the pictures you are being sent. For example, macaws sitting outdoors with palm trees in the background are not real. Scammers use random pictures they find on the internet.
